Michelle Coles is an award-winning young adult novelist who strives to write interesting stories about Black history to help readers see the connections between the present and the past.

BLACK WAS THE INK
Through the help of a ghostly ancestor, sixteen-year-old Malcolm is sent on a journey through Reconstruction-era America to find his place in modern-day Black progress. Black Was the Ink won the 2022 Grateful American Book Prize, a Skipping Stone Award, and the 2019 New Visions Award Honor.

Black Lives Matter in Books for Young Readers at Busboys and Poets
This session, on Wednesday, January 22, 2025 from 6pm to 8pm will introduce educators and families to K-12 children’s books in preparation for Black History Month and Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action. There will be author talks followed by book signing. The event is hosted by Teaching for Change, with cosponsors, at Busboys and Poets (14th & V Streets NW) as part of the monthly Beyond Heroes and Holidays series. Busboys and Poets Books will handle the event book sales and signing. This event is co-sponsored by An Open Book Foundation, Africa Access, and Shout Mouse Press.

The Historical Society of the District of Columbia Circuit and Howard University School of Law
Celebrating the launch of Soul of Court, a biography of pioneering federal jurist Chief Judge William Bryant, Michelle will appear on a panel as a board member of The Historical Society of the District of Columbia Circuit to discuss.

Maryland Libraries Together and Calvert Library
MD Libraries Together and Calvert Library are excited to present Michelle Coles to help celebrate Black History Month 2025. Ms. Coles, a civil rights attorney, wrote the award-winning young adult book "Black Was the Ink," a very readable story that brings history and contemporary issues to life in a very discussable way. In person, books will be available for sale and signing.
Due to limited space, please register if you will be attending in person to meet Ms. Coles. The event will also be streamed online on Calvert Library's YouTube channel.
